The smash and grab machine ‘Little Smasher’ is a project of SWR. The machine is used to complete the first stage of the glass recycling process on the remote sites. The machine takes up to 20 glass bottles in its top lid and crushes them to 1/5th of their original size in 10 seconds. Due to nature of the machine operation, the metal hammers in the machine tends to wear out at various rate. There is strong need of online real time condition monitoring system in the machine that can monitor the condition of the hammer pieces and can notify if any thing goes bad in it. This will save both unwanted maintenance visits to sites and time & cost to the company and yet will increase the availability of the machine to the users. The current project is investigating a smart and efficient cost effective way to have condition monitoring system right in the machine to have real time information on the condition of the metal hammers.
